Samsung SRW files from NX-series cameras capture 14-bit sensor data with millions of colors. GIF is limited to 256 indexed colors. Converting SRW to GIF produces tiny, universally compatible thumbnails at the cost of nearly all photographic quality — useful only for previews, catalogs, and compatibility-constrained platforms.

With Samsung out of the camera market since 2015, SRW files are a legacy format. Creating GIF thumbnails from SRW archives provides quick visual previews without requiring RAW-capable software that may eventually stop supporting Samsung's format.

GIF's universal support makes it suitable for thumbnail previews of Samsung NX archives in asset management systems, email attachments, and catalog databases. Every browser and email client displays GIF without issues.

As SRW support in software becomes less reliable, having small GIF preview copies of Samsung NX archives provides insurance for quick visual reference.

Decodes SRW's 14-bit Bayer data with Samsung color matrix, applies Floyd-Steinberg dithering for 256-color quantization. GIF89a with LZW compression. NX1 (28.2 MP) produces a GIF of 2-8 MB at full resolution.

Not for photographic use. GIF's 256 colors cannot reproduce Samsung's sensor output.

A 25 MB SRW produces a GIF of 2-8 MB at full resolution, under 500 KB with smaller dimensions.

GIF is not suitable for archival. Use DNG, TIFF, or at minimum JPEG for preserving Samsung NX photography. GIF is only for quick previews.

JPEG is far better for photographic output. Use GIF only when the platform requires it.
