MPEG Transport Stream and Matroska (MKV) are both container formats capable of holding multiple audio, video, and subtitle streams. However, TS is designed for broadcast transmission with 188-byte packet overhead and error correction, while MKV is designed for file-based storage with efficient variable-size EBML framing, chapter support, and virtually unlimited codec flexibility.
MKV supports everything TS offers — multiple audio tracks, subtitles, metadata — but in a more efficient file-based container without broadcast overhead. MKV files are typically 2-5% smaller than equivalent TS files due to the removal of null packets, PAT/PMT tables, and fixed packet padding. MKV also adds chapter markers, attachments (fonts, thumbnails), and seamless codec switching that TS lacks.
The converter can often remux TS to MKV without re-encoding — if the source uses H.264 or H.265 video and AAC or AC3 audio, the streams are copied directly into the MKV EBML container. This preserves original quality at maximum speed. MPEG-2 video streams can also be muxed directly into MKV. DVB subtitle streams are converted to SRT or ASS format for MKV subtitle tracks. The output uses Matroska's CUE points for frame-accurate seeking.
When remuxing (stream copy), quality is mathematically identical to the source — no re-encoding occurs. If transcoding is needed (e.g., converting MPEG-2 to H.264), quality depends on the chosen bitrate. At equivalent settings, the MKV container itself adds zero quality difference compared to MP4 or any other container.
