About XLSM to XLSX Conversion

XLSM is Microsoft's macro-enabled Excel spreadsheet format — an OOXML ZIP archive containing XML worksheets alongside embedded VBA macro code used for automated reporting, financial modeling, and data processing. Excel (XLSX) is the standard macro-free Excel format sharing the same OOXML architecture but explicitly prohibiting macros. Both formats use identical ZIP-compressed XML structures for worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, and pivot tables.

Converting XLSM to Excel strips all VBA macro code from the workbook while preserving every element of worksheet data, formulas, formatting, and features — producing a macro-free spreadsheet that is safer to distribute and will not trigger macro security warnings when opened.

Why Convert XLSM to XLSX?

Many organizations block XLSM files in email attachments and cloud storage as a security measure, since VBA macros can contain malicious code. Email security filters, SharePoint policies, and endpoint protection tools frequently flag or reject macro-enabled spreadsheets. Converting to Excel (XLSX) removes the macro payload, allowing the workbook to pass through security systems without triggering alerts.

Excel (XLSX) is also the standard format when sharing spreadsheet data with external parties who do not need the automation. Stripping macros reduces file size, eliminates security concerns, protects proprietary automation logic from disclosure, and produces a cleaner deliverable focused purely on the data and analysis.

Common Use Cases

  • Strip VBA macros from XLSM financial reports before distributing to external clients via email
  • Convert XLSM templates to Excel for distribution to users who do not need macro functionality
  • Remove macro code from workbooks to pass enterprise email security filters and cloud scanners
  • Produce macro-free Excel versions of financial models for auditor and regulator review
  • Clean XLSM workbooks before uploading to SharePoint, OneDrive, or Google Drive

How It Works

LibreOffice opens the XLSM file and saves as Excel (XLSX), preserving all OOXML worksheet content while omitting the VBA project storage. Cell values, formulas, formatting, conditional formatting, charts, pivot tables, data validation, named ranges, and sheet structure are all preserved identically — the underlying XML is virtually the same. Only the vbaProject.bin binary storage containing VBA modules, forms, and class modules is removed.

Quality & Performance

The conversion is essentially lossless for worksheet content. Every cell value, formula, format, chart, pivot table, conditional formatting rule, and data validation constraint is preserved identically since both formats use the same OOXML schema. The only change is the removal of VBA macro code. Computed cell values remain as they were when macros last executed — but the macros themselves are gone, so automated recalculation driven by VBA will no longer occur.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Run all macros before converting to ensure computed cell values are current — VBA automation will not run in the Excel output
  • 2Keep the original XLSM file if you may need the macro functionality in the future
  • 3Excel (XLSX) passes through most email security filters that block XLSM macro-enabled attachments
  • 4File size decreases slightly since the VBA project binary storage is removed
  • 5Verify that no cells depend on macro-driven calculations after conversion to ensure data integrity

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

Excel and XLSX produce the same macro-free OOXML spreadsheet format. The Excel alias exists for conversion pair routing. The output file is identical.
No. Only VBA macro code is removed. All cell values, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables, and features are preserved identically.
Yes. Standard Excel formulas are preserved and fully functional. Only VBA-driven automation is removed.
No. Once converted to Excel (XLSX), VBA code is permanently removed. Keep the original XLSM file if you need macros.
Renaming does not remove the VBA project storage from the ZIP archive. Excel may reject the file or behave unpredictably. Proper conversion removes macros cleanly.
