How It Works
FFmpeg decodes the FLV audio stream (MP3, AAC, Nellymoser, or Speex) to PCM and writes the raw samples into a RIFF WAV container. WAV uses little-endian byte ordering with interleaved channel data. The RIFF header defines format parameters in the 'fmt ' chunk, followed by raw audio data in the 'data' chunk.
Quality & Performance
WAV output captures every PCM sample from the decoded audio — there is absolutely no additional quality loss. The file faithfully represents whatever the original compressed audio contained, making it the perfect starting point for editing. However, WAV files are large — approximately 10 MB per minute of stereo CD-quality audio.
