About FLV to WMV Conversion

FLV (Flash Video) uses Sorenson Spark, VP6, or H.264 codecs in Adobe's proprietary web container. WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video format family, using VC-1 (SMPTE 421M) or WMV9 codecs within the ASF container. WMV was the dominant Windows video format from 2000-2012 and remains deeply integrated into Windows Media Player, PowerPoint, and Xbox. Converting FLV to WMV creates files optimized for the Microsoft ecosystem.

Why Convert FLV to WMV?

WMV is the path of least resistance for embedding video in PowerPoint presentations, playing on older Windows systems without codec packs, and streaming to Xbox 360 consoles. Windows Media Player handles WMV natively with full DRM support, chapter markers, and streaming capabilities. For enterprise environments running older Windows infrastructure, WMV may be the only accepted video format.

Common Use Cases

  • Embedding FLV-sourced video in PowerPoint presentations using WMV for native slideshow playback
  • Creating Windows Media Player-compatible video from FLV downloads for Windows XP/Vista/7 systems
  • Preparing FLV content for Xbox 360 media playback via the WMV format
  • Converting FLV training videos for enterprise Windows media servers that distribute WMV content
  • Playing FLV content on Windows Media Center PCs that use WMV as their primary video format

How It Works

FFmpeg encodes FLV video to WMV9 (Windows Media Video 9, equivalent to VC-1 Simple/Main Profile) using the wmv3 codec identifier. Audio is encoded to WMA v2 at 128-192 kbps. The output is wrapped in the ASF (Advanced Streaming Format) container with .wmv extension. WMV supports two-pass encoding for better rate control. Resolution and frame rate from the FLV source are preserved unless explicitly changed.

Quality & Performance

WMV9 at equivalent bitrates is roughly comparable to MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid/DivX) — not as efficient as H.264 but adequate for standard definition content. At 2-4 Mbps, WMV9 produces clean 720p video suitable for presentations and media center playback. Quality is well-suited for the Windows ecosystem where it was designed to operate.

Tips for Best Results

  • 1Use 1-2 Mbps for PowerPoint embedding to keep presentation file sizes reasonable
  • 2Choose two-pass encoding for better quality at lower bitrates — it is slower but allocates bits more efficiently
  • 3Keep WMV9 (wmv3 codec) for maximum Windows compatibility — VC-1 Advanced Profile is less widely supported
  • 4Set audio to WMA at 128 kbps for good quality with minimal overhead in the WMV container
  • 5For modern workflows, consider MP4 instead of WMV unless you specifically need PowerPoint or Xbox 360 compatibility

자주 묻는 질문

macOS does not natively support WMV. VLC for Mac plays WMV without issues. Microsoft discontinued Windows Media Components for QuickTime years ago. For Mac compatibility, MP4 is a better choice.
For new projects, MP4 (H.264) is preferred due to wider support. WMV remains useful for PowerPoint embedding, Xbox 360, and legacy Windows enterprise systems. It is a declining format outside the Microsoft ecosystem.
Yes. PowerPoint natively supports WMV embedding across all versions from 2007 onward. The video plays inline in the slideshow without requiring external players or codec installation.
Yes. WMV9/VC-1 supports up to 1920x1080 at high bitrates. The format was used for HD DVD and early Blu-ray discs. For the FLV-to-WMV use case, 720p or 1080p output is fully supported.
For 480p content: 1-2 Mbps. For 720p: 3-5 Mbps. For 1080p: 6-10 Mbps. These produce clean, watchable results. PowerPoint presentations work well at 1-2 Mbps to keep the PPTX file manageable.
Xbox One supports WMV via the Media Player app. Xbox 360 natively supports WMV in its dashboard media player. Xbox Series X/S also plays WMV. For Xbox, WMV is a reliable format choice.
