The conversion transcodes early mobile video codecs to modern H.264.
**Format detection**: We identify the specific 3GP variant—3GPP (GSM networks) or 3GP2 (CDMA networks)—and the contained codecs (H.263, MPEG-4 Part 2, or occasionally H.264).
**Video transcoding**: H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 video transcodes to H.264 at appropriate bitrate. We preserve original resolution—upscaling tiny videos would just add blur.
**Audio conversion**: AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) audio, common in 3GP, converts to AAC. Quality maintains or improves during conversion.
**Metadata preservation**: Capture date and other metadata transfers where available. Original timestamps help organize old content chronologically.

Quality is limited by the original 3GP content. Most 3GP videos are 176x144 (QCIF) or 320x240 (QVGA)—these were acceptable on 2-inch phone screens but look tiny on modern displays.
