Given X3F's severe third-party compatibility limitations, PNG provides the ideal lossless escape format. The resulting files are viewable on any device, editable in any software, and preserve every bit of the Foveon's distinctive resolving power. No Sigma Photo Pro dependency required.
The conversion decodes the X3F Foveon layer data through color separation, producing true-RGB output. This is encoded with PNG's DEFLATE lossless compression at 8-bit or 16-bit depth. A 15.3 MP SD1 Merrill at 8-bit produces PNG files of approximately 20-30 MB (vs 44 MB uncompressed BMP). 16-bit PNG doubles these sizes but preserves maximum tonal range. ICC profiles can be embedded.
PNG is mathematically lossless — decompressed pixels are bit-for-bit identical to the Foveon color separation output. The per-pixel RGB sharpness, the accurate color at every photosite, and the three-dimensional rendering are all preserved exactly. For Foveon images where per-pixel quality is the defining characteristic, PNG is the format that preserves the complete advantage.
