AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) is a voice-optimized codec operating at 8 kHz sample rate with bitrates from 4.75 to 12.2 kbps — the codec behind GSM cellular voice calls. DivX files contain full-bandwidth audio (MP3 or AC3) designed for movies and TV shows. Converting DivX to AMR aggressively compresses the audio to telephony quality, producing extremely compact files suitable only for voice-centric content on cellular devices.
AMR is the required format for voice messaging on many feature phones and legacy systems. If you need to extract a dialogue-only clip from a DivX file for MMS distribution, voicemail systems, or IVR phone trees, AMR produces the smallest possible file that remains intelligible as speech. A full movie's audio compressed to AMR occupies mere megabytes.
The audio is extracted from the DivX AVI container, decoded to PCM, downmixed to mono, and resampled to 8 kHz. The AMR-NB encoder then compresses the signal using algebraic code-excited linear prediction (ACELP), optimized for speech frequencies (300 Hz - 3.4 kHz). The output uses the standard AMR file format with a '#!AMR\n' magic header.
AMR at 12.2 kbps sounds like a clear phone call — voices are intelligible but flat. Music is unrecognizable. Frequencies above 3.4 kHz and below 300 Hz are completely absent. This is by design — AMR was built for voice, not general audio. If the DivX audio is music-heavy, AMR is the wrong choice.
