WMV (Windows Media Video) is Microsoft's video codec and container, the proprietary counterpart to DivX during the early 2000s codec wars. Converting DivX to WMV moves content from MPEG-4 Part 2 in AVI to Windows Media Video 9 in ASF/WMV containers. While both are legacy formats, WMV is better supported in Windows-specific environments — Windows Movie Maker, PowerPoint, Silverlight, and SharePoint all handle WMV natively.
Certain Microsoft ecosystem tools specifically require WMV input. Windows Movie Maker imports WMV more reliably than AVI/DivX. PowerPoint embeds WMV videos with full playback controls. SharePoint Online's media player handles WMV natively. If your workflow is deeply integrated with Microsoft Office and Windows media tools, WMV provides smoother integration than DivX AVI.
The DivX MPEG-4 Part 2 video is decoded and re-encoded using the WMV9 (Windows Media Video 9) codec, based on an early draft of VC-1. Audio is transcoded from MP3 to WMA v2. The output uses the ASF container (stored with a .wmv extension). WMV9 offers compression efficiency slightly better than MPEG-4 Part 2 but behind H.264.
WMV9 at the same bitrate produces slightly better results than DivX MPEG-4 Part 2 — it is a marginally more efficient codec. A 700 MB DivX movie can be converted to WMV at approximately 600-700 MB for similar visual quality. At higher bitrates (4+ Mbps), the difference between DivX and WMV9 diminishes.
