MTS files are AVCHD camcorder recordings using the MPEG-2 Transport Stream container with H.264/AVC video at up to 24 Mbps and AC3 or LPCM audio — the standard format written by Sony, Canon, and Panasonic consumer HD camcorders from 2006 to 2018. 3GP is a lightweight mobile container designed for 3G cellular networks, using H.263 or MPEG-4 Part 2 at low resolutions. Converting MTS to 3GP dramatically compresses full-HD camcorder footage into tiny files for feature phone playback.
AVCHD camcorder recordings at 1080i60 with 24 Mbps bitrate produce files far too large and complex for basic mobile phones. A single minute of MTS footage occupies roughly 180 MB — more than the total storage of many feature phones. 3GP at 176x144 with H.263 reduces this to approximately 0.5 MB per minute, a 360x compression ratio.
In regions where feature phones remain the primary computing device, converting camcorder footage to 3GP enables sharing family videos, event recordings, and educational content via Bluetooth, MMS, or slow cellular data connections. The conversion bridges the gap between HD camcorder output and the reality of low-end mobile hardware.
FFmpeg deinterlaces the 1080i MTS source (AVCHD typically records interlaced), massively downscales from 1920x1080 to 176x144 or 352x288, and re-encodes to H.263 video with AMR-NB audio: `-vf yadif,scale=176:144 -c:v h263 -r 15 -b:v 128k -c:a libopencore_amrnb -ar 8000 -ac 1 -b:a 12.2k -f 3gp`. The deinterlacing step is crucial since the source is typically 1080i.
The quality reduction is extreme — from full HD 1080i to QCIF 176x144. Detail, color accuracy, and temporal resolution are all drastically reduced. The output is suitable only for small phone screens where the viewer needs to see general content (recognizing people, understanding what is happening) rather than appreciating fine detail.
