How It Works
FFmpeg decodes the MP4 audio stream (typically AAC or AC3) and re-encodes it as PCM signed 16-bit big-endian (pcm_s16be) in the AIFF container. Big-endian byte order is the AIFF standard, unlike WAV which uses little-endian. Sample rate is preserved from the source (usually 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz). Bit depth can be set to 24-bit (pcm_s24be) for higher dynamic range. The AIFF container supports metadata chunks for markers, comments, and instrument data.
Quality & Performance
The output is uncompressed PCM, so the audio is as faithful to the decoded source as possible. However, since the MP4 source likely contains lossy AAC audio, the AIFF output cannot restore detail that was discarded during the original AAC encoding. The AIFF will be a perfect representation of the decoded AAC stream. File sizes are large — roughly 10 MB per minute for stereo 16-bit 44.1 kHz audio.
