About PNG to JPG Conversion
PNG and JPG serve different purposes: PNG excels at graphics with transparency and sharp edges, while JPG dominates photography with its superior compression. Converting PNG to JPG makes sense when you need smaller files, wider compatibility, or when transparency isn't required.
Our PNG to JPG converter transforms your images while giving you control over the quality-to-size tradeoff. Whether you're optimizing for web speed, preparing email attachments, or creating social media graphics, you choose the perfect balance for your needs.
Why Convert PNG to JPG?
PNG files are often unnecessarily large for photographic content. A PNG photo might be 5MB where an equivalent JPG would be 500KB—10 times smaller with no visible difference. When transparency isn't needed, JPG is simply more efficient.
File size matters for web performance. Google and other search engines penalize slow-loading pages. Converting PNG graphics to JPG can dramatically improve page speed scores, benefiting both user experience and SEO.
Some platforms and systems specifically require JPG. Print services, certain CMS platforms, and older software may reject PNG uploads. Converting ensures your images work wherever they need to go.
Common Use Cases
- Reduce image file sizes for faster web page loading
- Prepare photos for platforms that prefer JPG
- Create smaller email attachments
- Optimize images for social media uploads
- Meet JPG requirements for print services
- Convert screenshots to more portable format
How It Works
Our converter uses libjpeg-turbo with configurable quality settings from 60 (high compression) to 100 (maximum quality). Default quality of 85 provides an excellent balance for most uses.
Transparent areas in PNG become solid color in JPG (customizable—white, black, or any color). For images with transparency that must remain transparent, PNG to JPG is not the right conversion—consider keeping PNG or using WebP.
Color profiles (sRGB, Adobe RGB, etc.) and EXIF metadata transfer to the JPG output where applicable.
Quality & Performance
JPG compression is lossy—some image data is discarded. At quality 85+, the loss is imperceptible for photographs. For graphics with sharp text or lines, you may notice slight softening. If maintaining pixel-perfect accuracy is critical, keep the PNG.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Quality 85 is the sweet spot for most photographs — smaller files, no visible difference
- 2Transparent areas become white by default — choose a custom background color if needed
- 3For screenshots with text, use quality 90+ to avoid blurring sharp edges
- 4Expect 5-10x file size reduction for typical photographic PNG images
- 5Keep the original PNG if you plan further edits — JPG degrades on every re-save
