MOV files from Apple devices contain audio in AAC, ALAC, or PCM formats within the QuickTime container. AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is Apple's uncompressed audio standard, created in 1988 for professional audio on Macintosh systems. It stores raw PCM samples in big-endian byte order and is natively supported by Logic Pro, GarageBand, Final Cut Pro, and every macOS audio application.
When you need to edit audio extracted from MOV video files in professional DAWs, AIFF provides an uncompressed working copy that avoids compression artifacts during iterative editing. This is especially important for music production, podcast post-production, and film scoring where audio undergoes multiple rounds of processing.
AIFF is also the preferred delivery format for CD mastering on macOS and for audio interchange between Apple professional applications.
FFmpeg reads the MOV container, decodes the audio track (AAC, ALAC, or PCM), and writes uncompressed PCM data into the AIFF container using big-endian signed integer samples. Default output is 16-bit/44.1 kHz for standard recordings or 24-bit/48 kHz for professional sources. If the MOV contains PCM or ALAC audio, the decoded output is mathematically identical to the original samples. The AIFF COMM chunk stores format metadata while the SSND chunk holds the raw audio data.
AIFF output preserves the full quality of the decoded audio. From ALAC or PCM sources, the result is bit-perfect. From AAC sources, the AIFF captures every decoded sample without additional degradation — though the original AAC compression artifacts remain. Expect approximately 10 MB per minute of stereo audio at CD quality (16-bit/44.1 kHz).
