FFmpeg decodes the AIFF PCM stream, resamples from the source rate (typically 44.1 or 48 kHz) down to 8 kHz mono (AMR-NB) or 16 kHz mono (AMR-WB), and encodes using libopencore-amrnb or libopencore-amrwb. The resulting audio is muxed into a 3GP container. The compression ratio is extreme — a 10 MB AIFF minute becomes under 100 KB in AMR-NB, roughly a 100:1 reduction.

Significant quality loss is inherent. AIFF at 44.1 kHz captures frequencies up to 22 kHz; AMR-NB is limited to 300-3400 Hz (telephone bandwidth). Music will sound very degraded. Speech remains intelligible and natural-sounding, which is AMR's design target. AMR-WB expands the range to 50-7000 Hz and sounds noticeably better for voice.
