ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) is Apple's lossless compression format, open-sourced in 2011, storing bit-perfect audio in M4A containers at roughly 50% of raw PCM file size. ALAC is the native lossless format for Apple Music's Lossless tier and plays natively on every Apple device. 3GP is the lightweight multimedia container designed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for mobile phones on 3G networks.

FFmpeg decodes ALAC to full PCM (preserving the original lossless quality), then encodes to AMR-NB (8 kHz mono, 4.75-12.2 kbps), AMR-WB (16 kHz mono, 6.6-23.85 kbps), or AAC-LC within a 3GP container. Since ALAC is lossless, the decode step produces perfect PCM — the only quality loss occurs in the 3GP encoding stage. This produces better results than converting from a lossy source.
Starting from lossless ALAC means the 3GP output is the best possible quality for the target codec and bitrate. AMR-NB remains narrowband (300-3400 Hz) regardless of source quality — suitable only for speech. AMR-WB (50-7000 Hz) captures more of the lossless source. AAC-LC at 64-128 kbps in 3GP provides the best quality option for both speech and music.
