PNG's DEFLATE compression is significantly more effective than PCX's RLE compression, especially for complex images. Legacy PCX files converted to PNG are typically the same size or smaller, while being accessible to billions of modern devices that cannot open PCX format.
The PCX file is decoded by parsing the 128-byte header, decompressing RLE-encoded scanlines, and applying color palettes for indexed-color images. The pixel data is then compressed using PNG's DEFLATE algorithm, which is completely lossless. All PCX color depths (1-bit through 24-bit) are supported. Palette-indexed PCX files can optionally be stored as palette-mode PNG for maximum compression, or expanded to full 24-bit RGB. Sharp handles the PNG encoding with configurable compression level (1-9).
The conversion is perfectly lossless. Every pixel of the PCX image is preserved exactly in the PNG output. PCX's RLE compression is losslessly decompressed, and PNG's DEFLATE compression is losslessly applied. The output is a bit-perfect representation of the original PCX image data at the same color depth.
