About RAW to PNG Conversion

RAW to PNG converts camera sensor data into the Portable Network Graphics format — a lossless image format that preserves every pixel of the decoded RAW image without any compression artifacts. PNG was designed as the patent-free replacement for GIF and supports full 24-bit color (16.7 million colors), 8-bit alpha transparency, and gamma correction. It is the standard format for screenshots, web graphics, and any image where lossless quality matters.

How It Works

Sharp decodes the RAW sensor data via Bayer demosaicing, white balance, and gamma correction. The full-color image is compressed using PNG's DEFLATE algorithm (zlib) at configurable compression levels (1-9). Level 6 is the default, balancing speed and size. PNG stores pixels in 24-bit RGB (no transparency) or 32-bit RGBA (with alpha channel). Interlacing (Adam7) can be enabled for progressive web loading. PNG supports sRGB, ICC profile embedding, and text chunks for metadata.

Quality & Performance

Lossless. PNG compression is entropy-based — it reduces file size by finding patterns in the pixel data, but no information is discarded. The decoded RAW image is preserved with absolute fidelity. File sizes are larger than JPEG (typically 3-5x for photographic content) but smaller than uncompressed BMP or TIFF.
