About SK1 to WMF Conversion
SK1 is the native format of the sK1 open-source vector illustration program, focused on Linux-based prepress workflows. WMF (Windows Metafile) is Microsoft's legacy 16-bit vector graphics format, widely supported across Windows applications, older Office versions, and legacy systems. While WMF has been largely superseded by EMF, it remains the most compatible vector format for older Windows environments.
Converting SK1 to WMF enables sK1 vector designs to be used in legacy Windows applications and older Microsoft Office documents where EMF or SVG may not be supported.
Why Convert SK1 to WMF?
Some Windows environments — particularly older Office installations, enterprise systems, and legacy publishing tools — require WMF format for vector graphics. SK1 files cannot be opened by any Windows application natively. Converting to WMF produces the most broadly compatible Windows vector format.
WMF is also used in some document interchange scenarios where maximum backward compatibility is required. Government systems, legacy enterprise applications, and archived document templates may specifically require WMF vector graphics.
Common Use Cases
- Embed sK1 designs in legacy Microsoft Office documents that require WMF
- Import sK1 vector graphics into older Windows publishing applications
- Convert sK1 technical drawings for enterprise systems that only accept WMF
- Produce WMF versions of sK1 designs for backward-compatible document templates
- Migrate sK1 vectors to WMF for use in legacy government document workflows
How It Works
LibreOffice imports the SK1 file and exports as 16-bit WMF. Vector paths become WMF polyline and polygon records, fills become WMF brush objects, and text becomes WMF text output records. WMF's coordinate system uses 16-bit integers, which provides lower precision than EMF's 32-bit system. Colors are converted from sK1's CMYK/ICC model to RGB for WMF's GDI color representation.
Quality & Performance
Vector shapes and text convert accurately for most designs. WMF's 16-bit coordinate system has lower precision than modern vector formats, so very fine details or large complex designs may lose some precision. Gradients may be simplified to solid fills. Standard paths, text, and solid fills render correctly.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Use EMF instead of WMF unless the target system specifically requires the legacy format
- 2WMF's 16-bit coordinate system limits precision — verify fine details in the output
- 3For web use, convert to SVG instead — WMF is Windows-only
- 4Test the WMF in the target application to verify gradient and effect rendering
- 5Consider WMF only for backward compatibility — modern workflows should use SVG or EMF
SK1-to-WMF conversion produces legacy Windows-compatible vector graphics from sK1 designs, maximizing backward compatibility with older systems and applications.
