About VSD to BMP Conversion
VSD is Microsoft Visio's proprietary format for professional diagrams. BMP is the uncompressed raster format that stores pixel data without any compression. Converting VSD to BMP rasterizes Visio diagrams into raw pixel images readable by any Windows system or legacy application.
This conversion serves environments where uncompressed raster input is required — industrial control displays, legacy document management systems, and image processing pipelines that cannot handle compressed formats or vector rendering.
Why Convert VSD to BMP?
Some legacy Windows applications and industrial HMI systems only accept BMP. Converting VSD to BMP produces uncompressed raster images that work with any system, regardless of its codec support. The raw pixel data is also useful for OCR preprocessing and machine vision analysis of diagram content.
Common Use Cases
- Feed Visio diagrams into legacy Windows applications requiring BMP
- Create uncompressed raster versions of Visio network diagrams for industrial displays
- Prepare Visio flowcharts as BMP for OCR-based text extraction
- Export Visio org charts as BMP for document management systems
- Generate raw pixel data from Visio drawings for image analysis
How It Works
LibreOffice imports the VSD file via libvisio and rasterizes all shapes, connectors, and text at the specified DPI. The pixel buffer is written as 24-bit RGB BMP. At 300 DPI, a standard page produces approximately 25 MB of uncompressed data.
Quality & Performance
BMP output is pixel-perfect — no compression artifacts. Quality depends on the DPI setting. 150 DPI for screen display, 300 DPI for print. Vector elements from Visio rasterize cleanly at any resolution.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Use PNG instead of BMP whenever possible — lossless quality at 5-10x smaller size
- 2Match DPI to your intended display size for the sharpest output
- 3Plan storage carefully — BMP files are very large
- 4For web use, convert to PNG or WebP instead
- 5Process in small batches to manage disk space from BMP output
VSD to BMP produces uncompressed raster images for legacy systems. Use PNG instead when possible for much smaller lossless files.
