About FLV to AIFF Conversion
FLV (Flash Video) stores audio as compressed MP3, AAC, or Nellymoser within Adobe's streaming container. AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is Apple's uncompressed PCM audio standard, storing raw waveform data at full CD quality (16-bit/44.1 kHz) or higher. Developed by Apple in 1988 based on the IFF format from Electronic Arts, AIFF is the Mac equivalent of WAV and is the preferred import format for professional DAWs like Logic Pro, Pro Tools, and GarageBand. Converting FLV to AIFF gives you lossless, editor-friendly audio from legacy Flash content.
Why Convert FLV to AIFF?
Professional audio workflows on macOS rely on AIFF as the native uncompressed format. If you have FLV recordings containing music, voice-overs, or sound effects, converting to AIFF provides a lossless working copy that can be edited, processed, and mixed without introducing additional compression artifacts. AIFF also supports metadata chunks for loop points and instrument definitions used in music production.
Common Use Cases
- Importing audio from FLV concert recordings into Logic Pro or GarageBand for mixing and mastering
- Extracting voice-over tracks from Flash-era training videos for reuse in professional productions
- Creating high-quality sound effects libraries from FLV game recordings in Apple-native format
- Preparing audio stems from FLV sources for CD mastering workflows that require uncompressed PCM
- Archiving FLV podcast episodes as lossless AIFF files for long-term preservation
How It Works
FFmpeg extracts the audio stream from the FLV container, decodes MP3/AAC/Nellymoser to PCM, and writes uncompressed big-endian PCM data into the AIFF container. The default output is 16-bit signed integer at the source sample rate (typically 44.1 kHz). 24-bit and 32-bit float options are available for higher dynamic range. AIFF uses IFF-style chunks (COMM for format info, SSND for audio data, MARK for cue points).
Quality & Performance
The AIFF output faithfully captures every sample from the decoded audio — there is no additional quality loss beyond what the original FLV compression introduced. Since AIFF is uncompressed, the file will be roughly 10x larger than the compressed source. The quality ceiling is limited by the FLV's original encoding — a 128 kbps MP3 in an FLV will sound like 128 kbps MP3 even in AIFF, but no further degradation occurs.

Tips for Best Results
- 1Choose 24-bit output instead of 16-bit if you plan to apply significant effects processing — the extra headroom prevents clipping during mixing
- 2Match the output sample rate to your DAW project setting (typically 44.1 kHz for music or 48 kHz for video post) to avoid unnecessary resampling
- 3Preview the audio in the FLV before converting to verify the content is what you need — it saves time with large files
- 4Use AIFF for your working master and export to AAC or MP3 only as a final delivery step
- 5Label converted AIFF files with descriptive names immediately — uncompressed files all look the same size in a file browser
