About N-up PDF
N-up printing places several source pages onto one larger sheet, a layout printers call "2-up" or "4-up" depending on how many pages share the sheet. It is the fastest way to fit a two-page document, where each page is one side of a card, invitation, or flyer, onto a single sheet that can be printed, folded, or cut. Instead of two separate pages, you get one sheet with both pages placed neatly next to each other.
Choose how many source pages go on each output sheet: 2-up for pairs, or 4-up for four pages at a time. The layout control decides how those pages are arranged. Side-by-side places pages in a single row, stacked places them in a single column, and grid arranges four pages in a balanced 2x2 block. For the common two-page card, side-by-side produces a landscape sheet with both card faces adjacent, ready to print duplex or trim.
Every page keeps its original aspect ratio. Each source page is scaled to fit its cell without stretching or cropping, then centered, with even margins around the sheet and a small gap between pages so nothing runs together. Pages that are already smaller than their cell stay at full size rather than being blown up, keeping text and lines crisp.
Designers use N-up to proof multiple layouts on one page. Teachers combine worksheet pages to save paper. Small businesses print business cards, tickets, and loyalty cards two or four to a sheet. Event organizers lay out invitations and their reply cards side by side. Because the output is a standard PDF, it prints from any application and on any printer without special software.
Common Use Cases
- •Print both sides of a card side by side from a two-page PDF
- •Fit four pages onto one sheet to save paper
- •Proof multiple page layouts on a single sheet
- •Lay out invitations next to their reply cards
- •Print tickets or loyalty cards multiple to a sheet
How It Works
The tool uses pdf-lib to embed each source page and draw it onto a new sheet at a computed position. Pages are scaled with a single factor per page to preserve aspect ratio, centered within their grid cell, and never upscaled beyond their original size.
