Unlocking a PDF is the legitimate inverse of password-protecting one — and like any tool in this category, the rules of the road are clear: you must know the password, and you must have permission to modify the file. Our unlock tool handles both kinds of protection that PDFs use. An open password (user password) prevents the file from being viewed without authentication; once you supply the password, we decrypt the file in memory using QPDF and write back an unencrypted copy. A permissions password (owner password) allows viewing but blocks printing, copying, editing, or extracting pages; here, the unlock tool removes those restrictions so you regain full read-write access. Common legitimate uses include unlocking your own contracts where you forgot the permissions password, removing publisher-imposed copy restrictions from an academic paper you have a license to, or extracting quotes from PDFs you are reviewing. We refuse to attempt password recovery — there is no brute-force or dictionary attack in our pipeline. If you do not know the password, the document stays locked. This is intentional both for legal compliance and to prevent abuse.
