Convert to PDF/A — the ISO archival standard for long-term preservation.
About Convert to PDF/A
PDF/A is the ISO 19005 archival standard for PDFs that must remain readable decades from now — a strict subset of regular PDF that mandates self-contained files (every font embedded, no external dependencies, no JavaScript, no audio/video, no encryption). Government agencies, courts, healthcare providers, and large enterprises increasingly require PDF/A for any document that goes into long-term retention. Our converter supports the three most-common conformance levels. PDF/A-1b (released 2005) is the strictest and most-widely-mandated — required by US courts (CM/ECF), German government agencies (BMI), and most other state archives. PDF/A-2b (2011) adds support for JPEG 2000 images and transparency, useful for image-heavy documents. PDF/A-3b (2012) permits embedding arbitrary attachments (XML, CSV, source files) alongside the PDF, popular for invoice retention where both the human-readable PDF and the structured data need to live together. The conversion runs Ghostscript with the appropriate /PDFA flag, embeds all fonts that are subset-only, removes prohibited features (JavaScript, transparency in -1b mode, encryption), and produces a file that can be validated against veraPDF (the reference PDF/A validator). If the input contains features that cannot be converted (e.g. a font that cannot be embedded due to licensing), we surface a clear error rather than producing a non-conformant file.
How it works

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PDF/A-1b, 2b, and 3b?
1b (2005) is the strictest, banning transparency, JPEG 2000, and attachments. 2b (2011) adds JPEG 2000 and transparency. 3b (2012) additionally permits embedding arbitrary file attachments. When in doubt, use 1b — most strict but also most widely required.
Will the visual content stay the same?
Yes for the vast majority of files. Conversion may visually adjust elements that use prohibited features (transparency in -1b mode is flattened, missing fonts are substituted), but most PDFs come out visually identical.
Can I validate the result?
Yes. Run the output through veraPDF (open-source) or Adobe Acrobat Pro's Preflight panel. We aim for full PDF/A conformance, but if your archive requires a validation certificate run it through veraPDF as the authoritative check.
What happens if my PDF has JavaScript or audio?
JavaScript and audio/video are stripped during conversion (these are not allowed in PDF/A). If the JavaScript was driving form behavior, the form will become static; we surface a warning before saving.
Can I include attachments?
Only with PDF/A-3b. 1b and 2b prohibit attachments. Use 3b if you need to ship structured data (XML, CSV, original source) inside the archival PDF.
