Annotate PDF — Free Online Tool
Add highlights, text notes, and shape callouts directly on PDFs.
About Annotate PDF
Annotation is the markup layer that turns a PDF from a passive document into a working surface for review and feedback. Whether you are reviewing a contract, marking up a manuscript, doing peer-review on a research paper, or coordinating edits on a design brief, the ability to drop comments, highlights, and shapes directly on the page is essential. Our annotation tool supports four primitive types: highlights with full color customization for emphasizing passages of text, text notes that appear as pinpoint markers and expand into popup commentary when clicked, rectangles for boxing off regions of the page or callouts, and circles for ringing specific elements. Each annotation can be individually positioned, sized, recolored, and deleted. Multi-step undo means you can experiment without committing. The output is a fully spec-compliant PDF with annotations embedded as proper /Annot dictionary entries — they show up correctly in Adobe Acrobat, Preview, browsers, and every annotation-aware reader. This is structurally different from rasterizing your markup onto the page (which is what cheaper tools do); the proper annotation dictionary entries mean your colleagues can click them, reply to them, or remove them.

Frequently asked questions
Will annotations show up in Adobe Acrobat?
Yes. We use spec-compliant /Annot dictionary entries so any reader that respects the PDF spec — Acrobat, Preview, Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and mobile readers — will show them correctly.
Can colleagues delete or reply to my annotations?
Yes, in any annotation-aware reader. Our annotations are not flattened into the page; they are individual interactive objects that other tools can edit further.
Are highlights actual highlights, or yellow rectangles?
Actual highlights — using the PDF /Highlight annotation type. They follow the underlying text glyphs (not a static rectangle), so they look right even if the page is re-flowed in a reader.
Can I lock annotations so they cannot be edited?
Yes. After applying annotations, run the result through our Compress PDF tool with the flatten option to fuse annotations into the page content — making them permanent.
Is there an undo for individual annotations?
Yes. Each annotation can be deleted individually with the delete handle, or the entire session can be rolled back with undo.
