Flatten PDF — Free Online Tool
Fuse form fields, annotations, and layers into page content.
About Flatten PDF
Flattening a PDF is the operation of merging all interactive and overlay content — form fields, annotations, signatures, watermarks, multi-layer content — directly into the static page content stream. After flattening, a previously-fillable form becomes a static page where the filled values are part of the page itself. A previously-annotated PDF loses the ability to edit individual highlights or comments because they have been baked into the rendering. This is the right operation in three common scenarios. First, when you fill a form and want to ensure the values cannot be changed by the recipient — flatten and the values are permanent. Second, when you annotate a document and want the markup to display reliably in viewers that do not support annotations (some web previews, some mobile readers) — flatten and the markup is just part of the page. Third, when you need to send a PDF to a print shop or signing service that mandates flattened input. Our flatten tool runs Ghostscript to render every page (including all overlays and form fields) and writes the result as new page content. The output is structurally a regular PDF that anyone can open, but it no longer carries any editable form fields, annotations, or signature placeholders.
How it works
Upload your PDF (typically one with filled form fields or annotations).
Click Flatten. Ghostscript renders every page including overlay content.
Download the flattened PDF — all overlays are now part of the page.
Why use our flatten pdf
- Fuses form fields with their filled values
- Bakes annotations into the page rendering
- Removes interactive overlays — purely visual content remains
- Backed by Ghostscript for reliable page re-rendering
- Output works in every PDF reader including legacy/web previews
- Reduces file complexity for downstream tools
Backed by Ghostscript — re-renders every page with all overlays as static content.
Common use cases
- •Lock filled form values so they cannot be edited after submission
- •Make annotations display in viewers that do not support /Annot entries
- •Prepare PDFs for print shops or signing services that require flattened input
- •Reduce file complexity before applying further processing
- •Permanently 'burn in' watermarks and signatures
- •Convert layer-heavy PDFs (e.g. CAD exports) to single-layer documents
File size limits and privacy

Frequently asked questions
Will flattening change how the PDF looks?
No. The visual content is preserved exactly. What changes is the underlying structure — what used to be an interactive form field is now a rendered text element on the page.
Is flattening reversible?
No. After flattening, the interactive elements are baked into the rendering and cannot be turned back into editable forms or annotations. Keep the original if you might need it later.
Will flattening reduce file size?
Often yes, especially for PDFs with many annotations or complex layer structures. The flattened version has a simpler internal structure.
What happens to digital signatures?
Visual signatures (drawn or typed) are baked into the page. Cryptographic signatures (PKCS#7) become invalid after flattening because the document hash changes — only flatten before applying cryptographic signatures, never after.
Can flattened PDFs still be searched?
Yes for text-based content (vector text remains text). Image-based flattened content needs OCR to become searchable — run our OCR tool after if needed.
